I've created a design in Photoshop CS6, and used a large number of smarts object which made the workflow more easy at least for me. Now I've finished working on the design, and I want to "unsmart" all the objects due to the large file size of the PSD. I do not want to do Rasterize Layer because I want to keep every layer which was originally on the Smart Object. I want to convert each smart object some of them have Layer Styles applied to a group folder which will have all the layers inside + the FX applied originally to the Smart Object and it will be in the exact location of where the smart object was before. I couldn't find anything about this in the internet. Also, some of the smart objects has inner smart objects inside of them. I don't mind doing this manually, but to copy & paste every layer in smart object is very annoying way, because I must scale and transform the layers pasted. asked Jul 29, 2013 at 2152 matan129matan1293931 gold badge3 silver badges12 bronze badges 6 Double-click the Smart Object to open it in a new window Highlight all the layers in the .psb smart object which opens Choose Layer > Group from the menu Hold the Shift key down and drag from the Smart Object Window to your original document window with the Move Tool. Drag the fx icon from the Smart Object layer to the new Layer Group you just dragged over Delete the Smart Object layer. The only caveats to this method are scale and positioning. You may need to reposition some groups depending on how they interact with the edges of the original document. And if you scaled the Smart Object layer, you may need to scale the group as well. This method is far from perfect, but it's about the only method I'm aware of. Per comments, originally found by Joonas there appears to be a script written by Kamil Khadeyev which automates some of this. You can view details of the script at the Captain Awesome web site. If you double click on the smart object in your 'Layers' panel, it'll open up in a new window. Obviously, you can edit the contents of the smart object this way. But, if you select all the layers of your smart object - again, in the "layers" panel - then hover your move tool over the canvas, you'll be able to drag and drop all the layers onto the original canvas's window. You might have to drag & drop to get the alignment of things back in order, but overall it's a workaround for an otherwise difficult problem. answered Aug 30, 2014 at 522 Here's an easy way to unsmart a smart object in Adobe Photoshop CC on a Mac control + click the smart object layer select "select pixels" go into the Layer menu / New / Layer Via Copy or click command + J Note this his non-destructive to the smart layer. answered Apr 1, 2016 at 2148 1 Open Smart Object by double-clicking icon at the left edge of SO layer. From destination list, choose Main or New Doc Close without saving/Hide, or Delete your smart object. You're done. The new duplicated layers retains any style mods, as well. Welz9,92910 gold badges45 silver badges81 bronze badges answered Jul 3, 2016 at 255 If file size is the only issue, what you propose to do wouldn't solve it. A smart object or the equivalent of all its layers were grouped inside your main file, would result in the same files size. What you would want to do is change your embedded smart object to a linked smart object, which asks you to save the smart object out as its on file on your hard drive. So for each master file, you can create a Links folder and convert all your embedded smart objects to linked smart objects and save them into that Links folder for each master file. This will make your master file much smaller in files size, but still have all the layers nested inside the linked smart objects. answered Oct 18, 2019 at 2118 Converting the smart objects to layers and groups within the main document won't reduce the size of the main document. user144648 is correct about making your smart objects linked assets in order to reduce the main file size. answered Nov 25, 2020 at 020 1 I've just found this handy script. Note vector smart objects cause the script to fail. Good to know Tested in Photoshop CC 2019 Doesn't work with vector smart objects. Though the script can keep the smart object size or at least tries real hard to do it... it doesn't retain any other transformations, like skewing for example. It simply takes the original content and resizes that to fit the bounds of the smart object. answered Jan 28, 2021 at 1232 1 Scail each smart object to the exact size they are represented in your final file. Select all the layers in the smart object and drag then to your final file Use the smart object to aling and check the scail of the new files that you dragged from it.

If you’re too far along in your project to use the undo command, you might feel hopeless. Maybe your smart objects are stuck like that forever… Just kidding. Learning how to un-smart’ a smart object in Photoshop isn’t hard. With a couple of clicks, your layers will be converted back to normal in no time. With one method, you can convert it back to a single layer, while the other can bring back all your original layers. Regardless of which outcome you’re going for, below shares the best ways to un-smart smart objects in Photoshop! 1. Rasterize Your Smart Object To Turn It Off Rasterizing is typically used for vectors, but it also works for turning off smart objects. With this method, you’ll end up with your smart object as a regular layer. Any layers within your smart object will become merged, and they will no longer be editable. If you’re okay with losing your layers, the rasterize option is an excellent solution to disable smart objects. With your smart object layer selected, right-click, and select Rasterize Layer.’ Your smart object will turn off and convert back to a regular layer. 2. Convert To Layers To Turn Off Your Smart Object In Photoshop CC 2020, a new addition has been made to make smart objects less permanent. Now you can convert your smart objects back to layers with ease. Unfortunately, if you’re operating in an older version of Photoshop, this method will not work for you. To turn off your smart object and convert it back to layers, first, right-click on your smart object. Then select Convert To Layers.’ If you only had one layer in your smart object, it will convert itself to a single regular layer. Now, if there were multiple layers within your smart object, the result is slightly different. With multiple layers, your smart object converts itself into a group. Within this group are all of the layers that were previously a part of your smart object. From here you can do what you’d like with the group, but the main job is done. You’ve successfully turned off your smart object! Conclusion Besides these two options, there’s not much you can do to get rid of a smart object.

Any filter applied to a Smart Object is a Smart Filter. Smart Filters appear in the Layers panel below the Smart Object layer to which they are applied. Because you can adjust, remove, or hide Smart Filters, they are nondestructive. You can apply any Photoshop filter that has been enabled to work with Smart Filters—except for Lens Blur, Flame Picture Frame, Trees, and Vanishing Point—as a Smart Filter. In addition, you can apply Shadow/Highlight as Smart Filters. To work with Smart Filters, select a Smart Object layer, choose a filter, and then set filter options. After you apply a Smart Filter, you can adjust, reorder, or delete it. To expand or collapse the view of Smart Filters, click the triangle next to the Smart Filter icon, displayed to the right of the Smart Object layer in the Layers panel. This technique also shows or hides Layer Style. Or, choose Layers panel Options from the Layers panel menu, then select Expand New Effects in the dialog box. Use filter masks to selectively mask Smart Filter effects. After you apply a Smart Filter, you can drag it or an entire group of Smart Filters onto another Smart Object layer in the Layers panel; press Alt-drag Windows or Option-drag Mac OS Smart Filters. You can’t drag Smart Filters onto regular layers. If a Smart Filter contains editable settings, you can edit it at any time. You can also edit blending options for Smart Filters. When you edit a Smart Filter, you can’t preview filters stacked above it. After you finish editing the Smart Filter, Photoshop again displays the filters stacked above it. Edit Smart Filter settings Edit Smart Filter blending options Editing Smart Filter blending options is similar to using the Fade command when applying a filter to a traditional layer. Reorder, duplicate, or delete Smart Filters You can reorder Smart Filters in the Layers panel, duplicate them, or delete Smart Filters if you no longer want to apply them to a Smart Object. When you apply a Smart Filter to a Smart Object, Photoshop displays an empty white mask thumbnail on the Smart Filters line in the Layers panel under the Smart Object. By default, this mask shows the entire filter effect. If you made a selection before applying the Smart Filter, Photoshop displays the appropriate mask instead of an empty mask on the Smart Filters line in the Layers panel. Use filter masks to selectively mask Smart Filters. When you mask Smart Filters, the masking applies to all Smart Filters—you can’t mask individual Smart Filters. Filter masks work much like layer masks, and you can use many of the same techniques with them. Like layer masks, filter masks are stored as alpha channels in the Channels panel, and you can load their boundaries as a selection. Like layer masks, you can paint on a filter mask. Areas of the filter that you paint in black are hidden; areas you paint in white are visible; and areas you paint in shades of gray appear in various levels of transparency. Use the controls in the Masks panel to change the filter mask density, add feathering to the edges of the mask, or invert the mask. By default, layer masks are linked to regular layers or Smart Object layers. When you move the layer mask or the layer using the Move tool, they move as a unit. Mask Smart Filter effects Change filter mask opacity or feather mask edges Display only the filter mask Move or copy filter masks Delete a Smart Filter mask If you delete a filter mask, you can subsequently add another mask.
